Dear patients, family members and friends,
We are delighted to be organising the 4th EBMT Patient & Family Day in collaboration with patients and patient organisations across Europe. This important event will take place on Saturday, 20 March 2010 at the Universität Wien (Vienna University campus), site of the old Vienna General Hospital, located in the centre of the city.
An informed partnership between patient, doctor and nurse provides many advantages and benefits for both parties involved. Choice of treatment, best medical care and coverage of all possible therapeutic options are of vital importance in increasing confidence and trust. These patient and family issues have become an integral part of the EBMT’s activities with increasing attendance of the patient and family day every year. The efforts of the EBMT have resulted not only in the compilation of the largest transplant registry in the world (340.000 stem cell transplants) but have also led to the EBMT becoming one of the founding members of the Worldwide Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) which has created a network of BMT organisations from across the globe equating to a registry of approximately 53.000 stem cell transplantations per year.
This focus in the plenary sessions this year will be on the topics of rehabilitation after stem cell transplantation, photopheresis for treatment of graft-versus-host disease, psycho-social support of patients and relatives, and the association of medicine and music. Four workshops held in parallel will provide excellent information on disease-specific treatment options and new developments in the field of haematology and transplantation.
Simultaneous translation in English and German will facilitate mutual comprehension amongst participants. Additional time will also be provided for questions and answers after each presentation in order to stimulate discussion.
Vienna’s inspiring charm, its acclaimed art nouveau cultural heritage and its attested reputation as a host of international events make it a perfect venue for the 4th EBMT Patient & Family Day.
