Climate

Autumn is generally mild in Istanbul. Temperatures vary around 15-20 degrees Celsius. However, it can rain occasionally. Therefore, we recommend to check the weather forecast shortly before your arrival.

All official prices are indicated in Euro (€). The official currency in Istanbul is the Turkish lira. All major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops.

Electricity

The electrical current in Turkey is 220 volts AC, 50Hz. Sockets take the standard, round-pinned European plugs.

Insurance

The congress organisers cannot accept liability for personal injuries sustained, or for loss or damage of property belonging to conference participants, either during, or as a result of the meeting. Please check the validity of your own insurance.

Invitation Letter

Individuals requiring an official letter of invitation may write to the Administrative Secretariat. This procedure is designed to assist participants to obtain a visa or permission to attend the meeting and does not apply to registration fees or other expenses. Please note that invitation letters can only be sent if the registration and payment has been received by the Administrative Secretariat.

Language

The congress language of the WSF congress is English. The national congress which takes place in parallel from Saturday, 31 October to Sunday, 1 November 2015 is in Turkish. Please visit this website for more information. The national language of Turkey is Turkish.

Responsibility

The participant acknowledges that he/she has no right to lodge damage claims against the organisers should the holding of the conference be hindered or prevented by political events (such as acts of terrorism, danger of hostility, war etc.) or by unexpected economic events or generally by force majeure, or should the non-appearance of speakers or other reasons necessitate program changes. With registration, the participant accepts this proviso.

Restaurants

Istanbul offers you plenty of good restaurants serving traditional dishes. There are also various restaurants that serve fine international cuisine.

Shopping

There are a lot of different shopping opportunities in Istanbul. The Grand Bazaar which exists since the 15th century and houses over 3’000 shops is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. Furthermore, there is the famous pedestrian street Istiklal Caddesi on which you find many different shops. The majority of the top shopping centres are close to the Taksim area and very easy to reach by public transportation or taxi. Opening times are from 10.00 to 22.00 daily. Smaller shops are open from 10.00 to 19.00 and are closed on public holidays.

Speakers’ Service Centre (SSC)

All speakers are requested to hand in their PowerPoint presentations at least one hour before their lecture at the SSC.

Time Zone

Istanbul is in the Eastern European Time Zone (EET). EET is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2).

Tipping

Tips are welcome and it is normal to leave the waiter/waitress a tip of 10% of the bill.

Visa Requirements

Most tourists will need some kind of visa to enter Istanbul/Turkey. There are a few visa types, which depend on your passport type, country of origin and the purpose of your visit. As visa requirements vary for each country please visit the site of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and contact the Turkish embassy in your country as early as possible.
